Zelve Open Air Museum's cave dwellings, on camera
Highlights
- Caves carved into three cliffs
- A community resettled in the 1950s
- Shelves and niches cut into rock
- A passage connecting two dwellings
- How a whole neighbourhood once lived
About this tour
This session moves through Zelve, a valley where an entire community lived in caves carved into three cliffs until the 1950s. You see the entrance to the valley, a carved interior room with shelves cut into the rock, and a passage connecting two dwellings underground. Together the stops show how a whole neighbourhood once functioned here.
I begin with a sound check at the valley entrance, then we move deeper in while you ask questions about daily life. I pause inside the dwelling a little longer so you can see the carved shelves clearly. At the end I send a short note on the history we covered.
This suits anyone interested in how people actually lived in Cappadocia's rock rather than just the landscape itself. It also suits a traveller comparing Zelve with Göreme before choosing which to prioritise.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 6 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cappadocia before heading out.
-
Zelve Valley Entrance 17 min
The camera looks into a valley of interconnected caves carved into three cliffs. I explain how an entire community lived here until it was resettled in the 1950s.
-
Carved Interior Room 17 min
From just inside one dwelling, you see shelves and niches cut directly into the rock walls. I point out where a family would once have stored food and belongings.
-
Connecting Passageways 17 min
We move along a narrow passage linking two dwellings underground. I explain why the caves were built to connect this way rather than as separate homes.
-
Your questions 11 min
Time to ask anything about Cappadocia: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 5 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Turkish tea and Göreme, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Istanbul time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
