About this tour

This session crosses the dunes onto West Sands and walks out toward the retreating tide, looking at one of the longest stretches of open beach on this coast. You see the dunes giving way to open sand and the wet tideline left behind as the water pulls back. Euan explains what makes this particular beach so recognisable and how locals actually use it day to day.

After a short sound check at the dunes, the walk moves out across the sand toward the water, with time for questions throughout. Euan answers as you go and sends a short note afterwards on the best tide times for a walk.

It suits anyone who wants a calmer, more natural side of St Andrews away from the golf and the ruins. It also appeals to those interested in coastal walking generally.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of St Andrews before heading out.

  2. The dunes above the beach 15 min

The camera crosses low dunes onto the open sand, the town's skyline visible behind. Euan points out the beach's long straight run, famous from its use in a well-known film's opening scene.

  3. The tideline 15 min

Walking out toward the water, the camera follows the wet sand left by the retreating tide. Euan explains how the beach's flatness makes it a popular spot for both walkers and golfers practising nearby.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about St Andrews: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cullen skink and The Scores, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in London time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
