About this tour

This session looks at the Palais des Festivals outside its two famous weeks in May, from the red carpet steps to the handprints set into the pavement nearby. You see the building's blunt, functional design and learn what actually happens inside it the rest of the year. It is a short session about a landmark most visitors only picture at its busiest.

We spend time at the steps before stepping back for the full facade, since the contrast between the glamour and the plain building is the point. I answer questions about the festival or the building as they come up. A short note on this year's programme follows the call.

This suits anyone curious about the festival without visiting during it, or who wants the story behind a very photographed building. It also works well paired with a walk along La Croisette.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Cannes before heading out.

  2. The red carpet steps 15 min

The camera looks up the famous steps, bare and quiet outside the festival, hand and foot prints of past guests set into the pavement nearby. I explain what the building is actually used for the rest of the year.

  3. The bunker facade 15 min

Stepping back, you see the building's blunt, functional exterior, designed more for hosting large audiences than for looking elegant. I point out why it earned an unflattering nickname from locals soon after it opened.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Time to ask anything about Cannes: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 3 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Petits farcis and Forville, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Paris time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
