About this tour

This session covers the Galleria Borghese's best-known works without going inside the ticketed rooms, using the gallery building and the park around it. You hear about Bernini's Apollo and Daphne, six Caravaggio paintings, and Raphael and Titian pieces held inside, then walk the wider Villa Borghese park once the gallery is behind you. It moves from art history to open parkland over three stops.

The call opens with a sound check, then the guide talks through the collection from outside before finishing with a walk through the gardens, leaving room for questions throughout. A short list of the works mentioned is sent afterwards.

This suits anyone with an interest in Baroque sculpture and painting, or looking for a green corner of Rome to picture.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.

  2. Galleria Borghese, from the entrance steps 21 min

Outside the gallery, the guide describes Bernini's Apollo and Daphne and The Rape of Proserpina, two marble groups carved to be walked around and viewed from every angle.

  3. Outside the picture galleries 21 min

The guide talks through six Caravaggio paintings held in two rooms upstairs, Canova's reclining Paolina Borghese, and Raphael's Deposition beside Titian's Sacred and Profane Love.

  4. Villa Borghese park 21 min

Walking the park paths after leaving the gallery building, the guide points out the umbrella pines and open lawns where Romans come to walk, run and picnic.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cacio e pepe and Testaccio, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
