Highlights

  • A ring of canals planned as one project
  • Why the city did not simply grow by accident
  • What to look for in the buildings while walking
  • A clearer sense of what you are looking at
  • A good pairing before a live canal walk

About this tour

This is a planning call about the canal ring's history, meant to be booked before you actually walk it rather than during. I explain why the ring was planned as a single seventeenth-century project rather than growing by accident, and what to actually look for in the buildings once you are there yourself. You leave with a clearer sense of what you are looking at rather than a vague impression of pretty canals.

We go through the planning history first, then move to practical pointers for reading the buildings as you walk. I leave the last stretch of the call for any specific questions.

It suits anyone who prefers understanding a place before walking through it. It pairs well with any of my colleagues' live canal walks booked right afterward.

  • A 45-minute call with a local guide
  • Honest tips on where to eat, stay and what to skip
  • A short follow-up note with every place mentioned

Not included

  • Bookings made on your behalf
  • Phone or data charges from your provider

Itinerary

  1. Hello, and what you want to know 5 min

The guide calls you and asks what you are after: planning Amsterdam, recommendations, or just questions.

  2. Why the ring exists 15 min

I explain why the city planned three concentric canals in the seventeenth century rather than letting the city grow outward without a plan.

  3. How to read it while walking 15 min

We go through what to actually look for once you are walking the canals yourself, from house gables to warehouse conversions, so the walk means more once you get there.

  4. Your questions 7 min

Ask anything that is still on your mind, there is no fixed script.

  5. A written note after the call 3 min

You get a short follow-up message with everything mentioned, so you do not have to remember it all.

Good to know

  • A stable phone or internet connection, whichever the guide uses to reach you.
  • No app to install. You answer when the guide calls, or join a video call if you would rather.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The call is not recorded. Keep your own note of anything you want to remember, or wait for the follow-up message.
  • Have your questions ready, though there is time to think of more as you go.

Questions about this tour

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
