About this tour

This session walks Majorna, the former dockworkers' district west of the centre. You see the narrow streets of wooden housing built for shipyard families and the newer cafes that have moved into old workshop spaces. Johanna traces the neighbourhood's shift from working docks to its current mix.

She moves at a steady pace through the narrow streets, since the district is best seen slowly rather than covered quickly. Questions about the shipyards themselves come up regularly, and she answers with what she knows of the area's working history.

This suits anyone interested in how a working-class district changes without losing its shape. It pairs with Johanna's other sessions for a fuller sense of Gothenburg beyond its planned centre.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Gothenburg before heading out.

  2. Dockworkers' housing 21 min

The camera moves through Majorna's narrow streets of wooden houses, built a century ago for families working the nearby shipyards.

  3. From docks to cafes 21 min

Further along, I point out where old workshops have become cafes and small shops, while the street layout itself has barely changed since the shipyards were working.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Gothenburg: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pickled herring (sill) and Vasastan, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
