Carmo Convent ruins, roofless since the earthquake
Highlights
- A roofless nave, left as memory
- Open arches framing the sky
- Stone fragments gathered from the city
- History kept unrepaired, deliberately
- One of Lisbon's most striking ruins
About this tour
This session shows the Carmo Convent ruins, a Gothic church left roofless since the 1755 earthquake as a deliberate act of memory. You see the open arches framing the sky above, then the nave floor holding stone fragments gathered from elsewhere in the city. Few ruins anywhere are kept quite this deliberately unrepaired.
We start with a sound check beneath the open arches, then move along the nave for the second stop, leaving space for quiet as much as for questions. I send a short list of names and dates once the session ends.
It suits anyone drawn to buildings that carry visible history rather than restored versions of it, and travellers interested in the earthquake's lasting mark on Lisbon. This session covers the roofless nave, which now serves as a small museum space viewed from its open floor.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.
-
The open arches 21 min
The camera looks up through the convent's roofless Gothic arches to open sky, and I explain why the building was left exactly as the 1755 earthquake left it.
-
The nave floor 21 min
We move along the nave floor, and I point out the fragments of stonework kept here from other damaged buildings around the city.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bifana and Bairro Alto, worth a slower look.
Good to know
- A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
- Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
- Times are shown in Lisbon time, so check the time where you are before you book.
- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
