About this tour

This session sits inside one of Vienna's historic coffeehouses, tracing the rules and rituals that have not changed much since 1876. You see how an order for a Melange or an Einspänner is understood without much said aloud, and hear about the writers who once worked from these tables. It ends at the corner where Trotsky reportedly played chess.

After a sound check from a quiet corner, the guide walks through the room table by table, explaining the coffee names, the waiters and the unspoken rules as they come up. You can ask about anything from the marble columns to the pastries on the counter. A short list of coffee names and what to order follows afterwards.

This suits anyone planning to sit in a Viennese coffeehouse and wanting to know what to ask for and how to behave. It also suits readers of Zweig or Altenberg curious to see the rooms where they wrote.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Vienna before heading out.

  2. Café Central 21 min

Inside the marble columns of Café Central the camera follows a waiter carrying a silver tray between tables, the same layout used since 1876. The guide explains the house rules, from the newspaper rack to how long you can sit.

  3. The order at the counter 21 min

At the counter the camera watches an order go through: a Melange, a Verlängerter, an Einspänner, each a different ratio of coffee to milk to cream. The guide explains what separates one from the next.

  4. The chess table 21 min

The camera settles on the corner table where Leon Trotsky is said to have played chess before the war. The guide talks through the writers, Peter Altenberg and Stefan Zweig among them, who treated these rooms as an office.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Vienna: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Wiener schnitzel and Innere Stadt, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vienna time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 8 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
