About this tour

This session follows an afternoon route from the Aventine hill down into Testaccio, using the Orange Garden's view, the keyhole of the Knights of Malta and the Protestant Cemetery. You see Circus Maximus from above, Santa Sabina's original fifth-century doors, and the grave of John Keats among the cypress trees. The walk covers quieter corners of Rome away from the main sights.

After the sound check, the guide moves point by point down the hill, lining up views and stopping at each site for your questions. A short list of what was seen is sent once the call ends.

This suits anyone who prefers the quieter side of Rome, or has a personal interest in the Romantic poets buried there.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.

  2. The Orange Garden 21 min

From the garden's terrace, the camera looks down on the long oval of Circus Maximus and across the river to the domes of the centre, with the guide pointing out the best angle for the view.

  3. The keyhole and Santa Sabina 21 min

At a plain green door, the guide lines up the keyhole view through three countries to St Peter's dome, then walks into Santa Sabina, a fifth-century basilica that still has its original carved wooden doors.

  4. The Protestant Cemetery 21 min

Among the cypress trees, the guide walks to the grave of John Keats and explains why so many foreign poets and artists ended up buried in this one corner of Rome.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Carbonara and Trastevere, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
