About this tour

This session walks through Balat and Fener on the Golden Horn, from the courtyard of the Ecumenical Patriarchate to the iron church of St Stephen and the coloured houses of Balat below the red Greek school. The camera follows streets that carried Greek, Jewish, Armenian and Bulgarian communities side by side. It shows a part of Istanbul defined by who has lived there rather than by any single sight.

A sound check opens the call, then the walk moves between the three stops at an easy pace, with room for questions the whole way. A short list of the buildings and their history is sent after the call ends.

This suits anyone interested in Istanbul's religious and ethnic history, or anyone drawn to colourful, lived-in streets rather than monuments. It also suits former visitors who want the history behind a neighbourhood they have already walked.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Istanbul before heading out.

  2. Patriarchate courtyard 21 min

From the courtyard of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the camera takes in the entrance gate and the modest scale of the complex, and the guide explains its place at the centre of the Orthodox Christian world.

  3. St Stephen's iron church 21 min

Outside St Stephen's church, cast entirely from iron and shipped down the Danube from Vienna, the camera moves around its pointed spires, and the guide explains why the Bulgarian community built it this way.

  4. Balat's coloured houses 21 min

Walking through Balat's streets, the camera passes rows of colourful wooden houses and looks up toward the red Greek school on the hill above, and the guide talks about the neighbourhood's mixed history of Greek, Jewish, Armenian and Bulgarian residents.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Istanbul: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Baklava and Sultanahmet, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Istanbul time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
