About this tour
This session follows Caravaggio's paintings through three working churches in central Rome, San Luigi dei Francesi, Sant'Agostino and Santa Maria del Popolo, with a stop in Piazza Navona along the way. You see the Saint Matthew cycle, the Madonna of Loreto and the Conversion of Saint Paul as they hang today, alongside the streets where the painter lived and got into trouble. Church interiors are filmed as normal throughout.
The call opens with a sound check, then the guide moves church to church, pausing at each painting for questions before finishing with a few streets from Caravaggio's own life. A short list of the works and churches is sent afterwards.
This suits anyone with an interest in Baroque painting, or drawn to the more difficult side of an artist's life.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 7 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.
-
San Luigi dei Francesi 21 min
Inside the church, the camera settles on the Saint Matthew cycle, three canvases Caravaggio painted for this one chapel, and the guide explains the harsh light that made them shocking at the time.
-
Sant'Agostino and Piazza Navona 21 min
In Sant'Agostino, the guide points out the Madonna of Loreto, criticised in its day for the dirty feet of the pilgrims, then crosses into Piazza Navona, where Caravaggio was known for starting fights.
-
Santa Maria del Popolo 21 min
Inside the church, the guide stands before the Conversion of Saint Paul and describes the streets nearby where Caravaggio lived, drank and was more than once arrested.
-
Your questions 14 min
Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 6 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Amatriciana and Monti, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
