About this tour

This session walks from Plaza de España into María Luisa Park, tracing what the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition left behind. You see the tiled provincial alcoves, the Isleta de los Patos and the old Royal Tobacco Factory where Carmen is set. It is Seville's early twentieth-century face, built to impress the world.

The guide opens with a sound check, then walks from the square into the park, stop by stop, explaining what the exhibition was for and what remains of it. Questions come in as the walk goes, and a short list of what was covered follows afterwards.

This suits anyone drawn to grand architecture and world's fair history. It also suits viewers who have photographed Plaza de España without knowing the story behind it.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Seville before heading out.

  2. Plaza de España 21 min

The camera moves along the curve of Plaza de España, stopping at the tiled alcoves built for each Spanish province. The guide points out details specific to a few of them and explains the canal running the length of the building.

  3. 1929 Exhibition pavilions 21 min

The guide explains how Plaza de España and the surrounding pavilions were built for the 1929 Ibero-American Exhibition, meant to showcase Spain and its former colonies to the world. Several of the pavilions still stand as consulates and museums today.

  4. María Luisa Park 21 min

Walking into María Luisa Park, the camera crosses towards the Isleta de los Patos, a small island in the park's ponds. The guide continues to Plaza de América, pointing out the Mudéjar pavilion at one end.

  5. Royal Tobacco Factory 21 min

The walk ends outside the old Royal Tobacco Factory, now part of Seville University. The guide explains why Bizet set his opera Carmen among its cigar workers, even though he never visited Seville himself.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Seville: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Jamón ibérico and Barrio Santa Cruz, worth a slower look.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
