About this tour

This session climbs Fourvière hill, from the Roman theatre and odeon of Lugdunum to the basilica and the view over Lyon's two rivers. You see Mont Blanc on a clear day and follow the Rosary garden path down towards Vieux Lyon. It traces how a Roman capital became the medieval town below it.

The guide opens with a sound check, then moves from the ancient theatre to the viewpoint and the basilica before descending, stop by stop. Questions come in as the walk goes, and a short list of what was covered follows by message afterwards.

This suits anyone interested in how a city's ancient and medieval layers sit on top of each other. It also suits viewers who want the view explained rather than just photographed.

Included

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 10 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lyon before heading out.

  2. Roman theatre of Lugdunum 21 min

The camera stands in the Roman theatre of Lugdunum, its stone tiers still used for performances today, with the smaller odeon just beside it. The guide explains how this hill once served as the capital of Roman Gaul.

  3. Fourvière viewpoint 21 min

From the viewpoint beside the theatre, the camera pans across Lyon and its two rivers, with Mont Blanc visible on a clear day far to the east. The guide points out where the Roman city ended and the medieval town below began.

  4. Fourvière basilica facade 21 min

Outside the Fourvière basilica, the guide takes in the ornate facade and explains the history behind its construction, built in the decades after France's defeat in the 1870 war.

  5. Rosary garden path 21 min

The walk follows the Rosary garden path down the hillside towards Vieux Lyon, the camera catching the Renaissance rooftops coming into view below. The guide explains how a Roman capital ended up governed from the streets at the bottom of this hill.

  6. Your questions 18 min

Time to ask anything about Lyon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  7. A short list to keep 8 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Praline tart and Croix-Rousse, worth a slower look.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
