About this tour

This session walks the length of Vilnius Old Town, from the Gates of Dawn to Cathedral Square, before crossing into the self-declared Republic of Užupis. You see the venerated icon at the old city gate, the university's courtyards and St Anne's brick facade, and Gediminas Tower above the square. The walk ends across the river in the artists' district with its own written constitution.

After the sound check, the guide walks the old town end to end, pausing at each site for your questions, before finishing with a few lines from the Užupis constitution read out loud. A short list of the sites covered follows by message.

This suits anyone drawn to old European city centres, or curious about a neighbourhood that wrote its own constitution as a joke that stuck.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Vilnius before heading out.

  2. Gates of Dawn 21 min

Inside the small chapel built into the old city gate, the camera settles on the venerated icon of the Virgin Mary, and the guide explains why pilgrims still stop here on their way into the old town.

  3. Vilnius University and St Anne's Church 21 min

Walking through one of the university's older courtyards, founded in 1579, the guide leads on to the red brick facade of St Anne's Church, said to have impressed Napoleon enough that he wanted to carry it home.

  4. Cathedral Square to Užupis 21 min

From Cathedral Square, looking up at Gediminas Tower on the hill above, the guide crosses the river into Užupis and reads a line or two from the district's own tongue-in-cheek constitution.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Vilnius: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cepelinai and Old Town, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Vilnius time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
