About this tour

This session walks Alfama and Mouraria, Lisbon's two oldest neighbourhoods, from the lanes below the castle to the streets where fado is said to have begun. The camera takes in the São Jorge Castle walls, the Moorish quarter's narrow lanes, and a small ginjinha bar in Mouraria. It is a close look at the part of Lisbon that survived the 1755 earthquake mostly unchanged.

After a sound check, the guide moves through the two districts in order, stopping at each square and street corner named above, with questions taken as the walk goes. A short list of the stops is sent once the call ends.

This suits anyone drawn to old neighbourhoods and local history, whether planning a visit to this part of Lisbon or remembering one from before.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Lisbon before heading out.

  2. Alfama's lanes 21 min

The camera winds through Alfama, Lisbon's oldest district, moving lane by lane past small squares between the castle and the river, and the guide explains why this area survived the 1755 earthquake largely intact.

  3. São Jorge Castle walls 21 min

Below the castle walls, the camera looks up at the old fortifications and into the Moorish quarter's narrow streets, while the guide describes the district's roots in the city's Moorish era.

  4. Mouraria and a ginjinha bar 21 min

In Mouraria, the guide points out where fado is said to have started, then stops outside a small ginjinha bar, explaining the cherry liqueur and how locals still drink it standing at the counter.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Lisbon: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Pastel de nata and Alfama, worth a slower look.

  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.

  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
