About this tour

This session covers ancient Rome's core with an archaeologist, from the Colosseum and Arch of Constantine to the Roman Forum seen from the Capitoline terraces above, finishing at the Mamertine Prison. You see the arch's reused carvings, trace the Via Sacra through the Forum's ruins, and hear the legends tied to the old prison. Throughout, the guide focuses on how ordinary Romans lived, not just the emperors.

After the sound check, the guide moves between the three points, explaining the history at each stop and answering questions as they come up, before closing with a short recap of names and dates.

This suits anyone with a serious interest in ancient history, or brushing up before their own visit to the ruins.

  • Live video walk with a local guide

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Rome before heading out.

  2. The Colosseum and Arch of Constantine 21 min

Standing close to both, the guide points out the arch's reused reliefs from older monuments, then looks up at the Colosseum's tiered arches, explaining how the ancient crowd once moved through them.

  3. The Roman Forum from the Capitoline terraces 21 min

From above, the guide traces the line of the Via Sacra through the ruins below, pointing out which buildings served as law courts, temples and the political centre of the ancient city.

  4. The Mamertine Prison 21 min

Outside the old prison built into the hillside, the guide shares the legends attached to it, then talks through what daily life looked like for ordinary Romans rather than emperors.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Rome: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Cacio e pepe and Trastevere, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Rome time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
