About this tour

This session follows Cold War Berlin, from the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag to Checkpoint Charlie and a preserved stretch of the Wall with its death strip still visible. The camera moves along the old border rather than staying at the well-photographed spots. The guide separates the real history from what the souvenir stalls tell you.

The call starts with a short sound check, then follows the border stop by stop, with time for questions as new details come up on screen. Afterwards a short list of the sites and a few books worth reading follows by message.

This suits anyone interested in the Cold War and the history of a divided city, whether planning a visit to Berlin or simply curious from home. It also works for anyone who has already stood at Checkpoint Charlie and wants the fuller story.

Included

  • Live video walk with a local guide
  • Questions to your guide all the way
  • A short list of places to visit later

Not included

  • Internet connection
  • Travel to the city

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Berlin before heading out.

  2. Brandenburg Gate and Reichstag 21 min

Standing between the Brandenburg Gate and the Reichstag, the guide explains how this stretch of the city became the symbol of German reunification and points out the Reichstag's glass dome from the square below.

  3. Checkpoint Charlie 21 min

At Checkpoint Charlie, the guide walks past the souvenir stalls and photo props to explain what the crossing point actually looked like during the Cold War and who used to cross here.

  4. Wall remains and death strip 21 min

A preserved stretch of the Wall and the ground once known as the death strip give a sense of the real width of the border, and the guide tells stories of escapes and the spies who worked this line.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Berlin: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Currywurst and Kreuzberg, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Berlin time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
