About this tour

This session walks the Jordaan and the canal ring around it, from a quiet hofje courtyard to the exterior of the Anne Frank House and a brown café to finish. The guide explains how a working-class quarter of narrow streets became part of a UNESCO-listed canal ring, and what the almshouse courtyards were built for. It is a mix of architecture, history and everyday café culture.

The session opens with a sound check, then moves through the three stops at an easy pace, with time for questions once inside the courtyard. A short list of names and addresses follows once the walk is done.

This suits anyone planning a Jordaan visit or anyone who wants the neighbourhood explained without the crowds. It also works for returning visitors curious about its quieter corners.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.

  2. Jordaan canals 21 min

The camera follows one of the Jordaan's canals, and the guide explains how this former working-class quarter of narrow streets became one of the most sought-after parts of the UNESCO-listed canal ring.

  3. A hidden hofje 21 min

Through an unmarked door, the camera enters one of the Jordaan's hofjes, a quiet almshouse courtyard, and the guide explains who these courtyards were originally built for.

  4. Anne Frank House and a brown café 21 min

Outside the Anne Frank House, the guide gives a short account of the family who hid there, since the museum itself is only open on a ticketed visit, before the walk ends at a brown café nearby.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Stroopwafel and Jordaan, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 12 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
