Aaliyah Bennett

My grandparents settled in Brixton after arriving from Jamaica in the 1960s, and the market is still where most of my family does its weekly shopping. My Saturday sessions cover the Caribbean food stalls at their busiest, and I let the noise and the calling stallholders come through rather than talking over them. I also guide Electric Avenue, one of the first electrically lit streets in the country, which most visitors have no idea about until I point out the old fittings above some shopfronts. I am proud of this neighbourhood and try to show both its history and how it feels to live here now.
