I grew up inside the old town walls, close enough to the Arco da Vila that I used to time my walk to school by how long the storks nesting on it took to settle each morning. Most visitors to the Algarve head straight for the beaches and barely notice that Faro has a proper walled centre behind them. On camera I like starting right at the gate and letting you see how the streets narrow the moment you pass through it. Nine years of guiding later, I still point the phone up at those stork nests out of habit whenever I walk past.
