I used to crew a small passenger boat on the Thames between the centre and Greenwich, and I still prefer explaining the river from the towpath rather than any building set back from it. My sessions follow the Thames path down towards Greenwich, ending where the masts of the Cutty Sark rise above its dry dock, visible clearly from the public path outside. I explain the tides and the shifting mudflats as we go, since the river genuinely looks different depending on when you catch it. Eight years on and near the water has left me with more river trivia than any single session can hold.
