I have climbed Schlossberg most mornings for years, long before the funicular made the hill an easy stop for visitors. On camera I like starting where the old fortress walls used to stand, since only the clock tower and bell tower survived after Napoleon's troops levelled the rest in 1809. I explain why the tower's oversized hour hand exists, a detail most people never notice until it is pointed out. I keep the pace slow on the climb and let the view over the rooftops build gradually rather than rushing straight to the top.
