I have tended bar along the Schlachte for most of my adult life, so I know the promenade's history better than most of the people drinking on it tonight. On camera I walk the riverside strip after dark, pointing out where the old harbour quay used to load goods before the bars and restaurants took over the waterfront. I explain how the Weser itself shaped Bremen's fortunes long before anyone thought to put a terrace beside it. I keep the tone relaxed and let the river traffic pass through the shot when it does. Guiding this strip by video shows the water as much as the bars.
