I trained as an art historian before I ever guided anyone, and the Mauritshuis is still the collection I know best even though a call can only take you as far as its courtyard and the water outside. I talk through Vermeer and Rembrandt from there, describing brushwork and light the way I would inside, and I have found that people listen more closely when they are not also trying to read a wall label. On camera I move slowly between two or three points rather than a long list, since a still frame held for a minute teaches more than ten seconds of walking past a facade.
