I grew up near Foz do Douro and I still swim there most summer mornings before anyone else arrives. On camera I follow the river mouth out toward the open Atlantic, pointing out where the fresh water visibly meets the sea on a clear day. I explain the old forts built to defend the river entrance and how the neighbourhood shifted from a fishing area to a residential one. I keep the phone steady against the sea breeze, which is stronger here than anywhere else in the city. I answer questions about the coastline and its currents honestly, including where I would not recommend swimming.
