I live two streets from Fargegaten and remember when the hairdresser who started painting the shopfronts was still doing it building by building rather than all at once. My main session walks the street's bright facades, explaining how a private idea became one of Stavanger's most photographed corners. A second session moves into Gamle Stavanger itself, the eighteenth-century wooden lanes just up the hill, one of the best-preserved wooden townscapes in northern Europe. I try to keep both sessions close together in time, since walking straight from painted shopfronts into white wooden lanes says something about the city that neither does alone.
