I studied symbolism at university and Quinta da Regaleira gives me more material than almost anywhere else in Portugal. On camera I follow the paths through the gardens toward the initiation well, explaining the Masonic and alchemical references built into the stonework along the way. I keep the phone steady looking down the well's spiral staircase, since the depth is part of what makes it work on camera. I am careful to separate the documented intentions of the estate's builders from the more speculative theories that circulate about it. I answer questions about the symbolism in as much depth as anyone wants.
