I trained as an architectural historian, and San Clemente is still the building I find hardest to explain properly in one session, since a twelfth-century church sits directly on top of a fourth-century one, which itself sits on an even older Roman building below that. On camera I stay at street level and describe the layers rather than filming underground, since the lower levels are not somewhere a phone signal reaches anyway. At San Giovanni in Laterano I focus on the facade's scale, since it is easy to underestimate from a distance.
