My family has made presepe figures on Via San Gregorio Armeno for three generations, so I know exactly which workshops still shape the clay by hand rather than buying parts in. On camera I move slowly along the street, holding on the figures being made rather than only the finished shelves of them. In the Quartieri Spagnoli, where I also grew up, I like pointing out the washing lines and small shrines between buildings, since that ordinary detail says more about daily life here than any single sight along the main streets.
