I trained as a guide specialising in Sofia's religious architecture, and Alexander Nevsky Cathedral is still the building I most enjoy showing, since its gold domes were built in the early nineteen hundreds to commemorate Russian soldiers who died freeing Bulgaria from Ottoman rule. On camera I keep well back to take in the whole cathedral before moving closer to the carved entrance. I keep a formal, detailed pace and welcome questions about the history behind the building. Video suits a domed cathedral particularly well, since the camera can hold the whole structure in frame in a way a single photograph rarely manages.
