I have worked around Kurfürstendamm for most of my guiding career, and the bombed ruin of the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is still the building I find most striking to explain, since it was deliberately left damaged as a reminder after the war. On camera I walk the boulevard slowly before finishing at KaDeWe, one of Europe's largest department stores, where I point out a few of the more unusual counters inside. I keep a warm, conversational pace and welcome questions about west Berlin's postwar rebuilding as we go. Video works well for showing the contrast between the ruined tower and the shopping street around it.
