I grew up watching the Speicherstadt from my grandfather's old harbour office, back when the warehouses still smelled of coffee and spices rather than tourists. On camera I walk the canals between the red brick blocks, pointing out the cast iron hoists still bolted above the loading doors and explaining how the whole district sits on timber piles driven into the riverbed. I like slowing down at the narrower bridges, since that is where the reflections in the water say more than I can. Filming this district properly means matching my pace to the light, which changes fast this close to the harbour.
