I studied archaeology and spent two summers on an excavation near the Forum, which is why I still point out details most guidebooks skip, like tool marks left on stone blocks nobody has touched in centuries. On camera I move slowly around the Colosseum's outer ring rather than rushing to the arena floor, since the engineering holding the whole structure up is easy to miss at a glance. At the Forum and Palatine Hill I try to rebuild the space in words as we go, since ruins on their own can look like rubble to anyone who has not been told what stood there.
