I spent a decade in whisky retail before I started guiding, so the planning calls I run now are really an extension of that job, helping someone work out what to try and where. I do the same for the Fringe every August, since the programme is enormous and most first-time visitors need someone to help them plan realistically. I also run a call for anyone walking the Pentland Hills for the first time, going through the route on a map before they set off. I like this format because it lets me give proper attention to planning, which a walking session rarely allows time for.
