I live near the Basilica di Santo Stefano, so my sessions usually end there, moving slowly through the cluster of connected medieval churches while I explain how seven became four over centuries of rebuilding. Getting there means passing under a long stretch of porticoes, and I always stop halfway to show how the columns change from plain stone to carved capitals as the street gets older. Filming inside the churches is calm work, since the light through the small windows does most of it for me. I keep my voice low there, the way I would if I were actually standing inside.
