I worked for years as a gardener on palace grounds near the centre, which is probably why I still notice plants before architecture wherever I go. On a call I stay at the gates and courtyards of the Alcázar, since the deeper halls are only open to ticket holders inside, and I explain what those rooms hold from just outside the doorway. The mix of Mudéjar, Gothic and Renaissance work on the same wall still surprises me after all this time. I answer questions about the different building phases in detail, since that is usually what people are most curious about.
