I moved over from Cork more than a decade ago and never quite left, mostly because Magdalen's deer park convinced me this was a stranger and better city than I had expected. My sessions run early, when the park is quietest and the deer are most likely to be out grazing close to the path. I explain how the herd has been kept within the college grounds since the 18th century, a detail that surprises most people who assume it is a recent addition. I still notice my own accent standing out against the very English setting, and visitors often ask about it before anything else.
