I teach history at a school near the cathedral, so its striped facade and the unexploded naval shell kept inside are the details I most enjoy explaining on camera. I walk the exterior first, pointing out the black-and-white marble bands, before mentioning the shell's own story from a 1941 bombardment. Down at the port, I also cover the Lanterna, one of the oldest working lighthouses anywhere, explaining how it has guided ships into Genoa for centuries. I keep my pace measured, since both subjects reward careful explanation. I take questions after each stop rather than only at the end.
