I studied medieval history in Bremen and still find the Roland statue the clearest single symbol of what this city once fought for. On camera I stand first at the Town Hall's Weser Renaissance facade, pointing out details added centuries after the original building went up, before turning to Roland himself and explaining why his sword and shield stood for civic rights independent of the local bishop. I keep the pace slow in the market square, since the carvings reward a close look more than a quick pass. Filming this square means waiting for a moment without too many people crossing the frame.
