I grew up in Plovdiv's Old Town, and I still enjoy showing the Bulgarian Revival houses lining its cobbled lanes, each one built with the same distinctive overhanging upper floor. On camera I walk slowly between a few of the best-preserved houses, pointing out the painted decoration typical of the period. I keep a warm, conversational pace and enjoy questions about the merchant families who built these houses. Video suits a hilltop old town well, since the camera can take in narrow lanes and painted facades a rushed group tour usually passes straight by.
