I trained as an organist before I became a guide, so Hamburg's church interiors still pull me in more than most of the city's other landmarks. On camera I climb toward St Michaelis's tower first, since the view over the port from up there explains the church's old role as a landmark for incoming ships. I then walk a short stretch toward the smaller Baroque churches nearby, comparing how each survived the city's several fires and rebuildings. I speak slowly in these sessions, since the acoustics inside reward it. Filming a church properly means respecting the quiet as much as showing the architecture.
