I worked for years restoring buildings in the Sassi before I ever thought about guiding, so when I show the Palombaro Lungo cistern on camera I explain how the whole town above once depended on the rain it caught. I keep the phone low near the water so viewers get a sense of how deep the chamber actually runs, which is hard to grasp from the entrance alone. My family still bakes bread the way Matera always has, and I like ending a session near the oven so people can see the loaves before they go in, even watching only through a screen.
