My grandparents settled near Liverpool's Chinatown decades ago, and the ceremonial arch is still the first thing I show on a call before we move into the streets behind it. I explain how the community here became one of the oldest Chinese settlements in Europe, mostly tied to the old shipping trade. I speak Mandarin as well as English, which brings a different set of questions from callers with family connections here too. I keep the pace steady and point out shopfronts most visitors walk straight past.
