I trained as a history teacher before I ever picked up a phone to guide with one, and some habits from the classroom never left me, mainly the urge to ask a question back before giving an answer. On a call about the harder parts of the city's past I keep my voice steady and let silences sit rather than filling them. I choose a quiet hour for these sessions on purpose. What surprises people most is how recent some of this history still feels once you hear the dates out loud.
