Saint-Sauveur Cathedral and its cloister
Highlights
- A facade built over several centuries
- Carved columns in a Romanesque cloister
- Where Gothic and Romanesque stone meet
- One building, many centuries of work
- Aix's cathedral, explained stone by stone
About this tour
This session looks closely at Saint-Sauveur Cathedral, from its mixed Romanesque and Gothic facade to the carved columns of its cloister. You see where different centuries of building meet on the same wall and how the cloister survived changes made to the rest of the building. It is a focused look at one structure rather than a wider walk.
We spend time at each stop rather than moving quickly, since the detail is in the stonework rather than the distance covered. I answer questions about the architecture as they come up and point the camera wherever someone wants a closer look. A short note on the building's history follows the call.
This suits anyone with an interest in architecture or church history, without needing prior knowledge. It also works well before a visit to the cathedral itself later.
Included
- Live video walk with a local guide
- Questions to your guide all the way
- A short list of places to visit later
Not included
- Internet connection
- Travel to the city
Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Aix-en-Provence before heading out.
-
Cathedral facade 21 min
The camera looks up at the mixed facade, part Romanesque, part Gothic, built up over several centuries rather than in one go. I point out where each period's stonework begins and ends.
-
The Romanesque cloister 21 min
Inside the grounds, we stop by the cloister, its paired columns each carved with a different pattern. I explain how the cloister survived while other parts of the cathedral were rebuilt around it.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Aix-en-Provence: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Fougasse and Vieux Aix, worth a slower look.
Good to know

- The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
- Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
- Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
