Kongensgate, a street rebuilt at speed
Highlights
- A street rebuilt within about three years
- Shopfronts with their own decorative details
- Art Nouveau, put to everyday use
- The practical half of a rebuilt town
- A coherent look, achieved at speed
About this tour
This session walks Kongensgate, Ålesund's main shopping street, rebuilt entirely in Art Nouveau style after the 1904 fire. You see the shopfronts' individual decorative details and hear how quickly the whole street went up. Kari treats it as the practical, everyday half of the town's rebuild, compared with Brosundet's canal-side version.
She moves at a shopping pace, since the street itself is the point rather than any single building. Questions about the town's rebuilding budget and speed come up regularly, and she answers with the details she knows from her research.
This suits anyone who has taken Kari's canal session and wants to see how the same style continued into the working street behind it. It also suits a shorter visit, since the street is compact.

Further along I explain how the whole street went up within about three years, an unusually fast rebuild that still shaped the coherent look the town keeps today.

A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Bacalao stew and Nørvøy, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
