Highlights

  • The dam that gave the whole city its name
  • A town hall that later became a royal palace
  • The square at the centre of the city since its founding
  • Still used for markets and gatherings today
  • The clearest starting point for the city's history

About this tour

This session covers the square that has been the functional centre of Amsterdam since the city was founded around a dam on the Amstel. You see the square itself, still used for markets and gatherings today, and then the grand building on one side that started life as a town hall rather than a palace. It is the most direct route into understanding how the whole city got its name and its shape.

We start with a slow turn across the square before settling on the palace facade, since the building rewards a longer, steadier look than a quick pan. I take questions about either the square's history or the building's change of purpose.

It suits anyone wanting the most essential piece of the city's history explained clearly first. It works well as the very first session before anything else in the centre.

Included

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 5 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.

  2. Dam Square 21 min

You see the open square that has been the city's centre since its founding, and I explain how a dam across the Amstel gave the whole city its name.

  3. Royal Palace Exterior 21 min

The camera holds on the building's classical facade, and I explain how it was built as the city's town hall in the seventeenth century before later becoming a royal palace.

  4. Your questions 9 min

Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  5. A short list to keep 4 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Herring (haring) and Jordaan, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 10 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
