  • A single tree close to three centuries old
  • A garden that outlasted its own changing shape
  • A slower, more detailed nature session

About this tour

This session covers one of the oldest botanical gardens in the world from its public paths and gates, tracing its shift from a practical medicinal herb garden to a collection shaped by the old trading routes the city once controlled. You see the garden's layout and labelled beds from the perimeter, and then a single plant, close to three centuries old, viewed through the glass of its own small greenhouse. It is a slower, more detailed nature session than a simple park walk.

We move at an easy pace along the garden's edge, spending the most time at the old greenhouse since the tree inside is genuinely remarkable. I explain the garden's trading-route history as we walk between sections.

It suits viewers with a real interest in plants and history together rather than a quick green space. It pairs well with the Het Schip session for an afternoon away from the busiest streets.

Itinerary

  1. Welcome and sound check 7 min

The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Amsterdam before heading out.

  2. Hortus Botanicus Gate 21 min

You see the garden's tree-lined paths and greenhouse rooftops from just beyond its entrance gate, and I explain how the garden began in the early seventeenth century as a source of medicinal herbs.

  3. Trading-Route Beds 21 min

The camera looks along the fence line at rows of labelled beds visible from the public path, and I explain how the collection grew to include plants gathered along the old trading routes the city once controlled.

  4. Centuries-Old Cycad Greenhouse 21 min

We finish at a small greenhouse visible from outside the glass, home to a palm-like tree said to be around three hundred years old, and I explain how it survived several changes to the garden around it.

  5. Your questions 14 min

Time to ask anything about Amsterdam: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.

  6. A short list to keep 6 min

Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Herring (haring) and Jordaan, worth a slower look.

Good to know

  • A stable wifi or mobile connection makes the picture smoother than a shaky one.
  • Any phone, tablet or laptop with a camera works. You watch, the guide does the walking.
  • Times are shown in Amsterdam time, so check the time where you are before you book.
  • The session is not recorded, and recording it yourself is not allowed. Feel free to take your own notes.
  • Ask questions any time, out loud or in the chat. The guide will pause to answer.
  • Sessions run in small groups, up to 9 people, so there is room for everyone to ask something.

How reviews work

Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
