Original stone versus restored stone at the amphitheatre
Highlights
- Weathered limestone from around 90 AD
- Tool marks marking genuine original stone
- Restoration allowing modern events
- Two eras of stonework side by side
- An hour of focused Roman history
About this tour
This session compares the amphitheatre's original Roman stonework with its more recently restored upper sections. You see the weathered limestone of the lower tiers, dating from around 90 AD, against the cleaner restoration work above it. Mathis explains the reasoning behind adding modern sections to keep an ancient structure usable today.
The call opens with a sound check at the lower tier, then moves up to the restored sections. Mathis keeps his commentary direct and focused, giving one or two solid facts per stop rather than covering everything at once. A short list of what was compared follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone with a specific interest in Roman architecture or restoration history. It also works well before attending an event still held in the amphitheatre today.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Arles before heading out.
-
Lower tier, original stone 21 min
The camera holds on the amphitheatre's lower levels, weathered limestone blocks dating from around 90 AD. I point out tool marks and wear patterns that mark this section as genuinely original.
-
Upper tier, restored stone 21 min
You see the upper sections, added or restored much more recently to allow the arena to host events safely again. I explain the reasoning behind adding modern sections to an ancient structure.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Arles: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Rouille and Centre historique, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". We check reviews before they appear and publish positive and negative ones alike; we remove only reviews that break our rules (insults, personal data, unrelated content). Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
