Van Gogh's Arles, from the garden he painted
Highlights
- A hospital garden restored to match his paintings
- Flowerbeds matched to a specific canvas
- A café square from his most famous night scene
- What has changed, and what has not
- An hour connecting paintings to real places
About this tour
This session visits two sites tied directly to Van Gogh's year in Arles, starting at the restored garden of the hospital where he was treated and finishing at a café corner he famously painted at night. You see how closely the garden's current layout matches his canvas, then how much of the café square has stayed the same. Camille, who studied his year in Provence specifically, explains what changed and what survives.
The call opens with a sound check in the garden, then moves toward the square at a formal, careful pace. Camille has each stop prepared in advance, since getting details about the paintings right matters more to her than covering ground quickly. A short list of what was covered follows by message afterwards.
This suits anyone with a specific interest in Van Gogh's life and work. It also suits viewers who have seen the paintings and want to see the real locations.

Itinerary
-
Welcome and sound check 5 min
The guide joins the video call, checks the picture and sound with you, and gives you a quick sense of Arles before heading out.
-
Espace Van Gogh garden 21 min
The camera takes in the courtyard garden of the former hospital where Van Gogh was treated, its layout restored to match his paintings of the space. I point out exactly which flowerbeds correspond to which parts of the canvas.
-
Place du Forum café corner 21 min
You see the café-lined corner of Place du Forum, recognisable from one of Van Gogh's most famous night paintings. I explain what has changed and what has stayed remarkably similar since he painted it.
-
Your questions 9 min
Time to ask anything about Arles: prices, safety, food, or whatever you are curious about.
-
A short list to keep 4 min
Before you go, the guide sums up with a few things worth remembering: a dish to try: Riz de Camargue and La Cavalerie, worth a slower look.

How reviews work
Only travellers who booked and paid through Locals Guide and whose tour took place can leave a review, within 60 days of the tour. Every review is marked "Verified booking". Guides cannot pay for, edit or hide reviews, and ratings are the plain average of all published reviews.
